Through the Lenses of Espionage & Royals
CULTURAL WALKING EXPERIENCE
Estoril and Cascais are not only among Portugal´s most elegant seaside resorts — they also became a safe haven for thousands of refugees, both anonymous and illustrious. They also became a centre of wartime espionage and the final refuge for many European royal families.
Beginning at the Fausto Figueiredo statue in Estoril, we will visit the Cosmopolitan Summer resort created by Fausto Figueiredo, stopping at the historic Garrett Pastry shop (1934) to discover how a German-Jewish refugee introduced Berliner pastry to Portugal.
Soon after, we will enter Estoril Hotel Palácio, one of the most important gathering places for diplomats, spies and wartime exiles.
Here we will discover the story of Dusko Popov, the celebrated double agent whose audacity and flair helped inspire Ian Fleming´s James Bond.
Then we will walk along Tamariz beach to Cascais, the beloved seaside town of King Carlos I and the former summer residence of the Portuguese royal family,
before visiting the Town Museum and finishing at the Citadel Fortress.
